ICM-II: ABDOMEN, case 4

part2case4im1 part2case4USlab

TYPE-These are ultrasound images. the top two are in the sagittal plane, with the patient's head to the LEFT. The bottom two are coronal.

TERMINOLOGY -White areas are called 'hyperechoic' or 'echogenic' and dark areas are 'hypoechoic', or 'echo-lucent'.

TECHNICAL-No specific technical problems are evident on these images.

PATIENT-We often do not get a very clear idea of the body habitus from ultrasound images, but it is important to realize that for very obese patients, the beam may not penetrate the fatty layers well enough to generate a useful image. So if the image quality is good, the patient is probably not markedly obese.

The liver is outlined in green and the right and left kidney in yellow. Do the two kidneys look alike? The labels at the bottom of the images tell you what is being imaged. 'RK' is 'right kidney', and 'LK' is 'left kidney. Because ultrasound images are low spatial resolution, careful labeling is needed to show what is being imaged. You do not have as many clues to get oriented as for other types of imaging, such as radiography, CT or MR, so you need labels to know what you are looking at.
