The specialty of Radiology includes many different types of studies, all of which involve images of the body.

The commonest type of study performed is the x-ray or 'radiograph'.

In this type of study, a beam of very strong electromagnetic radiation is sent through a portion of the body, and the rays that are transmitted are detected with specialized equipment that can produce an image, based on how much of the beam came through and how much was blocked or deflected. The diagram on the right shows how this is done.

This is an x-ray of a common object for you to identify. X-ray images are usually shown with dense structures in WHITE and less dense structures in BLACK (notice that the air all around the object is very black).
